Behind the song
“Kil for You” was about my wife. It’s a love song, but I wrote it in my own language. Instead of trying to suddenly become traditionally romantic, I expressed love through loyalty, protection, providing and wanting someone permanently beside me.
There’s still plenty of lust and humor in the record, but underneath it I was talking about something much more serious. I wanted to build for her. I wanted her with me in the future. I missed her when she wasn’t around, and I was realizing that this wasn’t just another woman I was attracted to.
A big part of the song is also the contrast between where I came from and the life I was beginning to create. I went from the block to being able to provide things I once only imagined. For the first time, success wasn’t only about what I could have for myself—it was also about what I could give to somebody I loved.
That’s why the title is “Kil for You.” It takes something tender and expresses it through the harder language of the person I was. I was changing, but I hadn’t stopped being me. She was simply becoming one of the reasons I wanted to build something bigger.
