Behind the song
“Test Drive” was about my first girlfriend. There was still a part of me wondering where she went and why something that once felt so strong disappeared. You can hear that underneath all the confidence in the song—I’m moving forward, but I’m still hurt.
The “test drive” became my way of looking at love after that. If someone says they’re going to ride beside me, I want to know whether they’ll actually stay when life starts moving. At the same time, I was becoming extremely ambitious and convinced that I was going somewhere bigger. The flying, planets, rockets and sun imagery all come from that feeling of constantly moving upward.
So there are really two versions of me in the record: the person still looking backward at his first love, and the person looking forward and believing nothing is going to stop him. I wanted someone beside me—but before I trusted that again, I wanted to know they could actually handle the ride.
