Behind the song
“Drowning” is about trying to save someone you love while slowly realizing that you’re the one being pulled under. The relationship is over, but mentally I still can’t escape it. She follows me everywhere—even into my dreams.
The water imagery runs through the whole song: drowning, oceans, floating, rowing, storms. She becomes both the person I’m trying to reach and the reason I’m going under.
There’s also a contradiction running through it: part of me knows I should walk away, but she’s everywhere mentally. Even when I close my eyes, she’s still in my dreams.
By the end, the meaning becomes especially clear—the person I’m trying to save isn’t actually the one drowning.
