Behind the song
“Let It Go” wasn’t written about one specific woman. It was about essentially every woman I had been involved with before my wife.
There was a pattern in those relationships. They wanted more of me—more time, attention, commitment and eventually the possibility of building a life together—but I was always chasing something.
I had this overwhelming sense of purpose and ambition, and whatever goal was in front of me tended to take priority over the person beside me.
The song is also self-aware about the damage that caused. I knew these women weren’t necessarily asking for too much; I simply wasn’t willing to give them what they deserved.
That’s why the conclusion isn’t really rejection. It’s acceptance: if I couldn’t give someone the relationship she needed, the fairest thing I could eventually do was let her go.
There’s also a piece of my own transition buried in the wordplay—“used to sell pounds off the record / and now earn pounds off the records.” It connects the life I had been living with the one I was trying to build through music.
Looking back, “Let It Go” is about a recurring conflict in my life before meeting my wife: wanting love, but wanting my purpose more—and realizing those women shouldn’t have to wait for me to become ready.
