Behind the song
“Shmurda Talk” was me stepping directly into the world of street rap and showing what happened when I brought my level of writing into it.
I wasn’t creating a character. The lifestyle I was talking about reflected my real life at the time. But instead of simply talking street, I wanted to destroy street rappers lyrically with punchlines, metaphors, double meanings and nonstop wordplay.
That was the challenge behind the record. I could talk about the same things they talked about because I was actually living around it, but I believed my pen separated me completely. Almost every few bars I was trying to land another punchline or flip an idea in a way the listener wouldn’t expect.
There was an arrogance to it intentionally: this is your lane, I’m really living it too, and I’m still out-rapping you in it.
“Shmurda Talk” is both a snapshot of my real life during that period and a competitive display of lyricism.
I wasn’t trying to show that I could keep up with street rappers.
I was trying to show that I could walk onto their territory and demolish them with the pen.
