Behind the song
“Shadows” is one of my favorite songs I’ve written.
It’s about carrying darkness with you while still constantly searching for the light. There’s pain, loneliness and uncertainty in the song, but there’s also this belief that I’m supposed to keep moving forward—that even when I don’t completely understand where I’m going, stopping isn’t really an option.
The second verse is actually me talking to myself.
I describe myself like a star. From a distance, a star is beautiful. It shines, gives off light and can guide you through darkness. But get too close to that same star and the thing that made it beautiful can burn you.
That’s how I saw myself.
There was something inside me that made me driven, intense and able to shine through some very dark situations. But I also understood that the same intensity could make it difficult for people to get close to me without getting hurt.
That’s why the shadows and the light exist together throughout the song.
I knew I could shine.
I was still learning what came with being that bright.
