Behind the song
“Shooting Star” was about my wife.
I wrote the relationship almost like a fantasy, using space, galaxies, magic and these larger-than-life images to describe what I wanted to give her.
I wasn’t just telling her I loved her—I was telling her I could take her somewhere beyond the life she already knew.
That’s why the lyrics keep moving upward and outward: shooting stars, leaving the galaxy, elevators, escaping reality and traveling across the universe.
She’s my queen and I’m her majesty, and I’m inviting her into this world I believe I can create for us.
There’s also a lot of wordplay throughout it—Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, elevators going straight up, breaking through the glass ceiling, machines and love working mechanically.
All of those ideas build around the same feeling: there are no normal limits on where I believe we can go.
At its core, “Shooting Star” is me telling my wife: trust me, come with me, and I’ll take you farther than the reality you know now.
Let me take you across the galaxy.
