Behind the song
“Brothers” was about being betrayed by someone I considered my best friend—someone I considered a brother. There was a lot of anger behind it, but also the realization that walking away was better than letting that anger turn into something I could never take back.
By this point, I had started looking at every friendship I lost differently. Instead of only seeing the loss, I associated each person who disappeared from my life with another step up the ladder toward success. The more relationships I lost, the further I seemed to climb.
That’s really what “all the love that was lost was the cost” meant to me. I was beginning to accept that becoming the person I believed I could become might mean leaving people I once considered brothers behind.
