Behind the song
“Butterfly” was about loving someone deeply while trying to act like I could accept losing her.
The hook has this attitude of, “If you want to leave, then leave,” but the verses reveal that I didn’t really feel that way at all. I saw her as part of me, someone I depended on emotionally, and the thought of her actually leaving was much harder than I wanted to admit.
The butterfly became the perfect image for that conflict. Part of loving someone is being willing to let them fly if that’s what they choose, even when everything inside you wants them to stay.
There’s confidence and pride on the surface, but underneath it is vulnerability—the realization that you can love someone enough to give them the freedom to leave while desperately hoping they never do.
